The
foundation is active in six areas:
-
Renewable Energy
-
Sustainable Building
-
Sustainable
Business
-
Transport
-
Information & Education
-
Multiple Land Use
There
are one or more projects within each area. Some projects have already been
completed, others are in their final stage, some are in progress and
others must still be started. Before getting started, each project is
evaluated for whether or not there is community interest. This can be
difficult since per definition the foundation concerns itself with
controversial subjects.
The
projects are often thought up by board members and the organizations they
represent. However sometimes the foundation is also approached with a
project proposition by others. If it fits within the objectives of the foundation
and there is sufficient financing, time and public interest, such projects
are included in the foundation’s working plan. Unfortunately, the foundation
does not have a pot with money, from which other people’s projects can
be freely financed.
After
the first phase, a project must be able to continue independently or be
taken over by other parties. For example, the May Month was an initiative
of the foundation, however has been taken

over by the Tourist Information
Texel and the State Forestry Service (SBB). The Texel Academy is
another example of an initiative of the foundation, which is now an
independent foundation.
The
Foundation receives funds from the Town of Texel and the Province of North
Holland. In addition, the business community on Texel gives a contribution.
Most projects require an additional amount of money, which is requested at
various funding resources.
Most
of the projects have a term for a number of years. The province of North
Holland has now promised a subsidy for three years (2005 – 2007); the
town of Texel determines per year whether or not there are available funds.
The business community on Texel has also promised support for three years,
in principle.
In
addition, the business community on Texel contributes by putting many
working hours at our disposal. In this way, some projects have become
possible which otherwise never would have gotten started.
In
the years 2002-2004, the Foundation worked with a budget of around €
1,550,000 for three years. For every €uro invested by Texel in the
projects of the Foundation for a Sustainable Texel, the foundation
received approximately € 2.50 extra.
